Luxurious Crinolines and Bodysuits at the Bay Parade March 8, 2012 at 4:17 pm

Simone Osterlich’s show at the Bay last week was a vivacious escapist’s fantasy with a colour palette designed to knock the stuffing out of even the most exhorbitant flavours of recent years.

With all those hues and textures, one would have been forgiven for thinking that anything more would be as necessary as creaming the saffron rice pudding, but Osterlich obviously didn’t agree. For every different piece: luxury crinolines, bracingly sharp skirts, over fish net stockings, trouser suits in mauves and pinks, layered jelled hair worn high; each one had to be finished off with a twirl and a punch that brought tumultuous cascades of applause from the bling-studded audience.

When the last showpiece had been revealed, a cover version of an old Monkey’s song had Bruce P. St. John and Carol Brierspoint humming along in the side aisle on those greeny-yellow striped chairs and Savi Hanumanami, crooning away quite openly, looking quite fabulous in her enticingly buttoned sari. Her minders minded around her keeping straight-faced in their dapper outfits of black jumpsuits and white polo-necks, but they still managed to focus all eyes towards her, which might not have been quite the intention.

When the finale finally arrived, although it had been billed as a surreal display of technicolor cloud with an explosive end result, in the end, when it arrived, the scary noise frightened the wits out of us all, causing the barely clad ladies in the midst of their act to flay around their limbs in their Prussian blue and turquoise bodysuits. Nobody, thank their lucky stars, was at all physically hurt but three of the models, I think it was Gina Greerson, Tonya Jacobs and Stella Hardy, all seemed to end up on the same star’s lap. Georgio Stevendos, a usually quiet and introverted soccer goal keeper visiting the Bay from his hometown in Buenos Aires, Argentina, made his most ambitious catch of the season.  And at least,  being knocked over by this tangle of thrashing legs and arms managed to bring out some sort of human expression onto Candice Porova’s carefully posed face. The lavish displays of the Bay’s Conference facility were otherwise left untouched and still as lavish as ever.

Calvin Klein Euphoria is a sensory explosion that has to be smelled to be believed. Strong and seductive but clean and fresh, Calvin Klein Euphoria is now back and ready to take the perfume industry by storm with a new addition, Forbidden Euphoria.

Calvin Klein perfumes are among the most popular smells in the fragrance world and none more so than their iconic, Euphoria collection. For this it’s absolutely no wonder the brand has decided to expand the range and has just unveiled a new addition, Forbidden Euphoria.

Launched in 2005, Euphoria for women has a distinctive oriental scent, provided by black orchid and lotus blossom, with a fruity pomegranate finish. Euphoria Blossom, which was introduced in 2007, has a much softer smell and citrus notes kept the fragrance fruity.

Sophistication, seduction and mystery have always been at the main values of the Euphoria collection and its newest addition, Forbidden Euphoria is absolutely no different; encompassing the very same feel, in name and nature.

It boasts top notes of sparkling mandarin, peach blossom and iced raspberry, which offer a lighter, fresher scent compared to the previous two fragrances. Additionally cashmere, woods and skin musk give the perfume warmth and depth.

Even the packaging of Forbidden Euphoria stays true to the collection, the only difference being the splash of pink, which provides a fresh, youthful twist on the classic fragrance. If you haven’t yet experienced this sensory sensation, grab a bottle of seductive Calvin Klein Forbidden Euphoria today.

It’s Rutting Season: Stag-Wear for the Discerning Gentleman October 4, 2011 at 7:35 am

So, your best mate’s going to tie the knot and has one last chance to lark around in women’s clothes before being prohibited his life-partner? Well if you’re going to send him off in style, you should know what the discerning stag is wearing this season. So exactly which outfits are de rigeur in the stag style stakes?

Women have a timeless party classic in the ‘little black dress’. For the stag, it must be the Pirate costume. Why so popular? Because they ‘Aarrrr!’ After all, what could be better when you’re planning on demolishing a barrel-load of gut-rotting spirits and creating mayhem? Similarly, some historians have speculated that Norse raiders were essentially a really early form of stag party – one that often abducted the hitherto-unknown bride-to-be during the proceedings – which could explain the enduring popularity of the classic Viking outfit. Just don’t get too carried away. Or carry anyone else away.

When it comes to mens fancy dress, this season’s vogues include 70s and 80s-themed costumes, which are especially popular because nothing says ‘your carefree life is over’ like a timely dose of childhood nostalgia. Honestly, I pity the fool who doesn’t attract attention in a Mr.T costume, while a Ghostbusters outfit is guaranteed to capture the spirit of a pleasing night out.

Speaking of pleasiing, superhero outfits are massively popular with both sexes. My attention was drawn to a Batgirl outfit, while browsing, because my online shopping companion announced that she’d ‘wear that out, even if there was no fancy dress theme’, which mysteriously captured my attention.

The female costumes, of course, leave little to the imagination, but the male ones actively support it with cunning padding that makes gym memberships practically irrelevant. Batman, Mr.Incredible, and The Hulk in particular are ideal for the devoted pie enthusiast.

Now, the secret to looking stylish is accessorising, and while stags may not have as many options as the fairer sex, there are still a lot of choices. Inflatables add a party mascot or totem, be it a monkey, sheep or a banana. Then there is an enormous variety of wigs and moustaches to spice up your look, including the classic Afro.

However, one relative stag newcomer that is trending remarkably highly, according to the fancy dress experts, is the Borat-style Mankini:

Almost as popular as the character that introduced it, this slinky little green number starts cheap, and can easily be accessorised with a moustache-and-wig combo. The Mankini guarantees embarrassment for any groom-to-be, or challenge forfeiter, and draws instant attention from by-standers. Moreover, this cheeky little number always causes a stir with the ladies, and once the wedding has been and gone, it can still be utilised on Casual Fridays at the office. Snappy.

Cosmetics Tips to Combat the Coming Winter September 19, 2011 at 5:50 pm

Useful cosmetics are an integral part of any skincare routine but are never more important than in the biting cold of winter. The winter can have devastating effects upon the skin, predominantly because the lessening humidity causes skin to become dry. Without treatment skin can become hard and cracked. But help is at hand.

The most important weapon in your cosmetics arsenal has to be a great moisturiser. Moisturising is always important but never more so than in winter. A good daily moisturiser is a must-have cosmetic item, but just as everybody’s skin is different, one moisturiser can have greater benefits for one person than another. It is important to experiment and find the right moisturiser for you and your skin.

During summer, our skin produces natural oils which are in shorter supply during winter; what’s more these oils are depleted by frequent baths and showers. This means it can be useful to introduce a good body oil to your cosmetics routine, and apply it after bathing or showering. When exiting the bath or shower pat your skin with the towel, but do not rub. When moderately dry, apply the oil to your skin, pat away the excess and then allow the air to finish the job of drying your body naturally. This allows the oil to take and have a lasting effect upon your skin.

Our hands suffer more than the majority of our body during winter, because they are often in greater contact with the elements. Simple and affordable cosmetics solutions can prevent irritation and dry, cracked skin upon our hands. Choose a good hand cream, apply regularly and you will simultaneously retain important moisture and protect hands from the elements.

But don’t forget about your lips! They might be small, but it is mightily important to look after our lips during winter, because they can easily become dry, chapped and sore. This makes a good lip balm into a winter cosmetics essential. Apply generously and regularly.

A little time and small financial outlay can make all the difference to the wellbeing of our skin during winter, helping us all to look and feel great. If we can manage all of the above, and drink plenty of water too, we’re sure to be in safe hands until the sun has got his hat on once again.

The Indelible Imprint of Scary Masks August 2, 2011 at 12:25 pm

When John Carpenter released the horror classic ‘Halloween’, few anticipated the legacy it would have on modern cinema. Building on the groundwork of Hitchcock’s seminal masterpiece Psycho, it was Halloween more than any other film which set the standard for the Hollywood slasher flicks of the next 30 years. More than that, the ideas contained within the 1978 classic would go on to shape the very way we think about Halloween itself, for the film left the trope of the masked-killer-on-the-loose printed indelibly within the subconscious of every horror fan in the western world.

And what about scary masks? The original face of Michael Myers was purchased by production manager Tommy Lee Wallace for the princely sum of $1.98 from Burt Wheeler’s Magic shop on Hollywood Boulevard. The face he chose? Captain James T. Kirk. That’s right, Myers and Starfleet’s finest officer share a face. Wallace took the lady-killer Captain Kirk and with the aid of a little paint and a widening of the eye holes turned the legendary lothario into a slash-happy mass-murder. The difference couldn’t have been more pronounced; while Kirk deployed an amorous approach with the ladies, Myers preferred to poke them with the pointy end of a good sharp knife.

Thanks to the impulse buy of a production manager, trepid cinema-goers have been sleeping with the lights on for 30 years. The environmental repercussions of this are huge – could Halloween be the real cause of global warming?

Myers’ phiz has mutated into one of the iconic ‘faces of Halloween’. Every year, numerous mischief-making kids and adults relish the opportunity to don the scary face mask of Freddy Krueger or Leatherface or Jason Vorhees, the world’s deadliest ice-hockey goaltender.

Let’s not forget that some of Hollywood’s best talents have gone under the knife, and I’m not just talking about plastic surgery. While Jamie Lee Curtis got her big break in Halloween and memorably went on to become the Queen of Scream, many others have also enjoyed stratospheric rises to fame since their debut in blood and guts. Film aficionados may remember an incredibly youthful Kevin Bacon in Friday the 13th and a baby-faced Johnny Depp in A Nightmare on Elm Street. Meeting an untimely end at the hands of a masked psychopath can preface a glittering career.

What is it that makes these villainous killers so enduring? What is it that makes the slasher so much more memorable than the slashed? On the surface, your archetypal slasher-horror would seem such an easy genre to get right: all you need are a few fresh-faced actors stewing in their own hormones, some red corn syrup and a sharp instrument to skewer them with. The reality is that few horror movies ever achieve the mainstream success that inspires clothing lines or horrifying face masks. All of these films shared something more, something which touched a deeper nerve – the face masks of the villains themselves.

Youch! Hair Removal Trends, Types And Costs July 31, 2011 at 7:00 am

Unwanted hair removal is on the rise big-time. Studies indicate that about eighty percent of women and a surprising fifty percent of men have unwanted hair that they’d like to get rid of. Hair removal has been around for thousands of years and in each culture you’ll find varying socially acceptable amounts and areas of body hair.

People desiring hair removal all want 3 things:

1. To get rid of their unwanted hair with less pain.
2. Remove the hair without spending an arm and a leg, pun intended, (:–).
3. Diminish hair regrowth.

Now there are several processes for hair removal and each comes with its advantages, side effects and associated costs as well.

For decades, electrolysis and shaving had been the normal practice for removing hair, with the downsides being very painful and time consuming. Recently, modern techniques such as laser hair removal have given the world a better way to remove unwanted hair.

Here are the methods available for hair removal:

Temporary: Tweezing, Shaving, Epilators (mechanical and electrical), Chemical Depilatories
Dwindling Amounts Of hair: Waxing and Sugaring (tends to reduce hair growth with time)
Permanent: Electrolysis (Hair Electrology), Laser Hair Removal

Depending on the specialist involved and the type of treatment you desire, the price fluctuates.

Here’s a general costs guideline associated with the most popular types of hair removal:
1. Shaving: from $1-$25 for razors and supplies. Barbers or professional shaves are about $5-$30.
2. Waxing: now more popular than sugaring will run about $25-$75 for a home use kit and around $20-$200 for professional waxing in salons depending on how much of the body is to be done.
3. Laser: generally running several thousand dollars after repeated treatments and varied according to how much of the body is to be treated.

Overview and further information on the various types of hair removal: Shaving is and may always be the quickest and most painless form of short term or temporary hair removal.

Hair removal creams like Ultra Hair Removal, Emjoi Hair Removal System and Tend Skin are available in stores and can be ordered online. But be careful while buying the products on line and consult an expert to know which product is suitable for your skin type and location of hair removal. An excellent resource for looking into scams and products is a website called www.HairFacts.com.

Epilators are good if you have delicate skin. They are compact in size, portable and easy to use. Put bluntly an epilator pulls the hair out from the root and like any of the other methods has its advantages and disadvantages.

Waxing, although temporary is the other effective way for hair removal and can easily be done in the privacy of your own home. It does have many cautions though so if your not familiar with waxing make sure to consult with a dermatologist first. For best results with waxing let the hair grow out for 2-3 weeks.

General waxing tips and guidelines:
1. Wash skin to remove any lotion and natural skin oils.
2. Let your body dry completely.
3. Test over a small area first to ensure your skin doesn’t have any adverse effects.
4. Do not over heat the wax or it may burn.
5. Pain reducing gels can be used to avoid the pain.
6. The wax should be applied in the direction of hair growth.
7. Pull the wax backward from the direction of hair growth rather than pulling upward or out.
8. Wipe the skin with a moist towel to remove excess wax.
9. Use a good sunscreen lotion to avoid exposure to direct sunlight after waxing.

Laser hair removal is another way to get rid of unwanted hair permanently. These lasers destroy the pigment of the hair follicle preventing it from regrowth. It can be used to remove hair from a small area of a persons upper lip to full body back hair for men. Blisters or reddening of skin, dark spots and bumps on skin are to be expected after a laser removal treatment, but will heal quickly with almost no cause for concern. The major downside to laser is the associated costs. Repeated visits will be needed for complete coverage. Consult a laser hair removal salon in your area for further details.

For further information to hair removal consult a dermatologist in your area or stop in and visit one of the hair removal salons, I’m sure they’ll be glad to give you more information considering your a potential client.

Want To Get That Tattoo Removed? July 23, 2011 at 9:25 am

People get tattoos for any reason, and sometimes for no reason. We get tattoos express your love, to express ones own self, as a fan or admirer of some idol, under peer pressure, to be up with the Joneses or maybe just because its hip to get one.

Whatever the case is, many of us in adult life end up regretting this youthful adventure. It could be because the tattoo reminds you of a broken love relationship or may be that visible tattoo is coming in your way of getting good job or joining a coveted university. In other words, you desperately need to get it out of your way, but the very memory of the painful procedure you went through to get it done gives you cold feet.

There are several ways a person can undo a tattoo or at least make it less visible. All, barring one, are very painful and cumbersome. But before discussing ways to remove tattoos, lets first understand what is a tattoo.

What is a Tattoo

A tattoo, or dermal pigmentation, as the term self explains is a mark made on the skin by inserting pigment into the skin. It is accomplished by injecting this pigment into small deep holes made in the skin. Tattoos made this way are relatively permanent.

Apart from permanent tattoos there are also temporary tattoos. They are more like body sticker, similar to a decal. Temporary tattoos are made on the skin by transferring the design on the skin, rather than inside the skin, using water. Temporary tattoos are waterproof, but can be removed with oil-based creams, and are intended to last only a few days.

Methods of Tattoo Removal

There are several methods of tattoo removal available today showing variable performance, result wise and procedure wise. It is the size of the tattoo, its location, and the length of time it has been on the skin which make the physician decide upon the method to be used. The patients healing prowess also plays its part in deciding the method to be used.

Lets now discuss the methods.

Surgical Method

It is one of the most popular methods around, especially when the dyed area is small. The major advantage here is the removal of the entire tattoo in one go, particularly if it is small tattoo. Larger tattoos, however, require multiple surgical sessions where the centre of a tattoo is removed first followed by removal of sides at a later date.

The surgical removal process involves an injection of a local anesthetic to numb the area after which the tattoo is removed. The edges are then brought together and sutured.

With this procedure, there is minimal bleeding which is easily controlled with electrocautery. In some cases involving large tattoos, a skin graft taken from another part of the body may be necessary.

Rubbing the tattoo off

In this method, the tattoo is literally scrapped off. It is quite painful and cumbersome procedure but practiced nonetheless. There are two ways by which a tattoo is rubbed off the skin:

Dermabrasion

This procedure of tattoo removal involves spraying of a portion of the tattoo with a freezing solution, after which that part is sanded with a rotary abrasive instrument causing the skin to peel. Because some bleeding is bound to occur, a dressing is immediately applied to the area.

Salabrasion

This is an age old method of tattoo removal. As with the other methods, a local anesthetic is used on and around the tattooed area after which a solution of ordinary tap water dipped in table salt is applied. An abrading apparatus such as the one used with dermabrasion, or an even simpler device such as a wooden block wrapped in gauze, is used to vigorously abrade the area. When the area becomes deep red in color, a dressing is applied.

Laser

Laser tattoo removal is considered as the best of the solutions available. Though it is costly and might require multiple sessions, it ensures that tattoo removal is relatively pain free and blood free. Also the results have been quite encouraging and tattoos have been either totally removed or there were dramatic fading.

Laser tattoo removal procedure involves exposing the tattoo to the pulses of light from the laser, usually Q-switched Nd:Yag, Q-switched Alexandrite and the Q-switched Ruby. This exposure breaks up the tattoo pigment, which are removed from the body by the scavenger cells. More than one treatment is usually necessary to remove the entire tattoo.
